Shakespeare’s importance and relevance in today’s literature

The name “Shakespeare” is probably one you’ve heard before, though you may not exactly recall where. So why is it that your boring English teacher wants you to learn about a long-passed man, who just wrote a couple of poems. Well let me tell you why!
Shakespeare was a renowned writer who revolutionized the English language, and his impact is still apparent today. He wrote an abundance of plays and poems which all became very mainstream, and still is. His play “Romeo and Juliet” is a tragic love story about two archenemies, who fall deeply in love, but can’t be together because of their unfortunate family rivalry. This play, which was written 400 years ago, has had 25 movie adaptations! That’s a high amount considering its age. So, what exactly makes Shakespeare’s writing so good, that it deserves this kind of attention?
Shakespeare’s writing style was very beautiful, but also very complicated on paper. He wrote in iambic pentameter, which is a type of unrhymed meter that contains 10 syllables in each phrase, with each unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. This is now known as “The Shakespearean Style” or was more commonly called “Blank Verse”. With this method, each of his writings felt like an individual beating heart, which flowed beautifully. But what about individual words? Well for Shakespeare it wasn’t much of a problem to find the right words, because he would just make up his own. It’s often discussed, but he’s said to have invented over 1700 words, most of which we still use in modern day English.
