Hello everybody, my name is [NAVN A], I study sociology at the University of Maine. Today I will be talking about why it’s important for businesses to give ex-cons a second chance in society and at new workplaces. Right now, there are 2.3 million people incarcerated in prisons across the US. 97% of people in prisons right now will be released again, that’s 2.2 million people going to prison and coming back out again. Statistics show that about 30% of ex-cons will go back to prison within the first 6 months of them going back into society. One main reason for that is that they can’t find a sustainable workplace because of their criminal past and is forced back into criminal activities to support themselves and a potential family. Young ex-cons that had a hard time growing up are most likely seek back into their criminal past because it is the only thing they have ever known.

So why give ex-cons a second chance if they are just going to bring themselves back into criminal activities? Studies show that companies who hire ex-cons are more than happy with the work that they put into the opportunity that they have given them. Companies like Cascade Engineering is one of the many companies that like to give ex-cons a second chance, upwards of 75% of their 690 employees are in fact ex-cons1. The Federal Bonding Program is also a big supporter of giving ex-cons a second chance, they provide companies with an insurance in the first six months of newly employed ex-cons. Giving people who was incarcerated at a young age a new chance is also very important1. If they aren’t given a new chance, the only opportunity, they have is to return to their criminal life, and that is very bad, both for the society but also for the future of businesses because they at some point will have a hard time finding new employees if they reject everybody with a criminal
