It can be difficult breaking loose from your frames, especially if those frames are plastered with crimes you committed in the past. But who is to say that you can not get a second chance at societal acceptance? In this short story by Tim Gautreaux titled “rodeo parole,” we meet 4 inmates dealing with exactly that dilemma. The short story deals with social mobility as it revolves around 4 inmates trying to show the parole that they are truly good people, despite their pasts.
In this short story, by Tim Gautreaux, we get introduced to 4 four inmates, Jimmy, Little Claude, Nookey, and the murderer, who had been convicted for various convictions. Jimmy was the burglar, Little Claud who burned down his wife’s lover’s house, Nookey who dynamited a toxic-waste dump, and lastly the man who was only titled and known by his conviction. The four inmates that attempted to get their faces on state-wise paper, and therefore get the same destiny as the two members of last year’s winning team, which meant freedom. They wanted to convince everyone but most importantly the parole that they are “Good Joes”. Which indicates the social mobility in this text. Social mobility is the movement of individuals, families, or groups through a system of social hierarchy or stratification. In this case, going from being termed as the disgrace of the society, to essentially “normal” humans in society. While knowing what sacrifices and risks they must go through to enter society, they are still eager to be recognized as good people, even if that means that they have got a slim chance to break loose of the four walls of the prison cell.
