Ahoy guys! Right now, I’m aboard on The Lord Nelson school ship that´s bound for North America. I also happen to be the only Dane in a crew of 40 trainees all from the UK, so I’m fit to say, that I´ve had to adjust to some differences in culture. They are all very sweet, polite, and curious about where I come from. Therefore, we´ve discussed a few of the things, we find strange about each other’s daily routines. For example, I have noticed, that my fellow crew members love their tea! They have tea in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. Did you know; that tea first came to Britain in the early 17th century by the East Indian company, and was presented to King Charles the third? In fact, his wife princess Catherine set the trend for tea drinking. I don´t think, I´ve ever drunk as much tea, as I do on this ship! Other than that, the last two days have been exciting for us. On day 22 North America was sighted. It was a sight of a lifetime, when we all sighted the statue of liberty. The statue says a lot about the culture of USA. The statue symbolizes freedom, and was originally conceived as a sign of friendship and peace between France and the U.S. The Americans find it very important to preserve their freedom and independence. It´s a way for them to remember what they achieved by creating new lives, homes, and communities. They celebrate their independence as a holiday on the Fourth of July. After we spotted the statue of liberty, we got lucky enough to experience the Manhattan skyline. My team stood in a line with our hands behind our backs, as we faced the skyline. It definitely felt like a “movie moment” to see all the tall buildings, that I´ve watched in various of different sitcoms. Other than the amazing sights you´ll spot on The Lord Nelson ship, we as crew members, all have different task appointed to us. On day 22 I had to clean the ship with a couple of my fellow members. You probably think to yourself, “what´s fun about cleaning?” but it´s surprisingly enough, a fun task when you are in good company! After that we have plenty of free time to make use of. Most of the days I´ve played cards below deck. Because of the fact, that we all live, sleep, and eat together, we feel like one big family, and we understand each other on a different level. You are never bored because you always have someone to do something with. On day 23 I went on a shore leave with 3 of my shipmates to sightsee some of the famous tourist attractions. That´s another thing I find most amusing about travelling. The world is full of unexplored cultures and sights, and as H.C Andersen once said, “to travel is to live”. We decided to visit the U.S tallest building, namely the One World Observatory at World Trade Center. We found this to be the perfect way to spot all NYC all at once. We started off with the sky pod elevators, and I must admit, that even though I normally never get seasick, these elevators got me into some trouble. We then proceeded to get a 2-minute video presentation of gorgeous city images on floor 102. Then, we couldn’t help but to live our another of our movie dreams. So naturally we went on a shopping spree around the huge city, and many different stores. It was really a girls dream!
