What is Andrea Levy’s main message on English identity? What does it take – and not take – to be truly English?
Andrea has said many different messages on English identity but what stands out the most when she discusses her own identity, is that she feels home in England. She doesn’t feel like she is a real part of Jamaica because she has so many British traditions every day as of drinking a cup of tea in the morning and she has also lived her whole life in England and has only heard stories from the place she is originated from. Line 21, page 11 “England is the only society I truly know and sometimes understand. I don’t look as the English did in the England of the 30s or before, but being English is my birthright.”. This is a very important message from Andrea Levy where she states that England is the only society she truly knows and what is thought to be a strong indication of her feeling of being English. It takes will to be English and you have to feel English to be truly English.
How does she use personal experience to support her message(s)?
