Bi in Latin means two, camera in Latin means chamber, so put together means two chambers. The bicameral legislature refers to the lawmaking body of a country that has two separate houses or chambers to perform legislative functions like enacting laws, passing the budget, etc. In this case with the US, this can be less efficient as the approval from two houses is needed to pass a law which may take more time.

Compared to Denmark where we have a unicameral legislature which means they only have one chamber for enacting laws, passing the budget etc. But the upside of having a bicameral legislative is that it generally represents different segments of the society. The bicameral system's main objective is to represent people from all the sectors or societies of the country, in this case all the 50 states in the US.

The bicameral system in the US consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Also known as the US congress. The U.S. has a TRUE bicameral system in which each chamber is (roughly) equal in power, and either chamber can kill a bill by just not passing it. So, in the U.S., the House of Representatives and Senate split the power by roughly 50% to 50%.
