In the beginning The American dream was all about hope for equality and freedom but it has had different meanings through history, and today the American dream is a matter of discussion. For some people it’s the dream of making your way up on the social ladder, no matter of gender, class or ethnic background. For others it may be the opportunity to achieve the prosperity they couldn’t achieve in their countries of origin.
I have read two articles about two Americans but their stories are really different although they live in the same country. The first article is called ‘’Our America’’ and it’s about LeAlan Jones, who is an African-American kid. He talks about how it is for the black people to live in a country like America. He thinks that there are two different Americas because the ghetto, where he comes from, is like a different country. Here the laws and language are totally different from ‘’the real America.’’ He talks about how different people are living their lives in America;
An American is supposed to have life, liberty, prosperity and happiness. But an African-American is due pain, poverty, stress, and anxiety.1
He mentions the young people in the ghetto, who don’t know if there is a life tomorrow, they all have to make day-to-day decisions. LeAlan Jones wants us to see how hard African-Americans live in the ghetto. He doesn’t use the word; The American dream, but he says that he hope that someday the ‘’two Americans’’ will become one. His dream is to be acknowledged as an American. He wants all people in America, no matter look, skin color or religion, to have the same rights. He wants the American people to acknowledge the African-Americans as they are “one of their own”.
