The Amish people are a society, that was established around the 16th century. They didn’t believe that the church was strict enough, so they started their own religion. The main part of it is that Christ wanted people to live a simple life not based on economical abundance. They isolated themselves in small societies around in Europe, but when the space for them got smaller, they got invited to the USA by President William Penn. After that they started to emigrate to America, and they came to Lancaster County in Ohio in 1727. Nowadays they mostly live in Canada and Northern America around Ohio and Pennsylvania, but also in Switzerland. In North America they are about 75.000, and in the whole world about half a million. That is not very much, but it doubles every 20 years.
In their society they don’t have electricity, phones or other modern things, that we take for granted. The reason for that is their religion. It forbids things that optimizes and speeds up their life. They believe in a simple life that is not about material comforts. Instead of rubber wheels they have metal wheels on their vehicles, because then they can't go fast, and then it is harder for them to get stressed. Instead they have horse wagons or buggies as they call them. That is a wagon with a little wheelhouse on it. It is dragged by one or two horses. Mostly they only have one phone in their village, just as a precaution if something should suddenly happen. Some also have a generator and some lamps, but mostly they have oil lamps.
