Richard Mayhew serves as the protagonist in Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy story “Neverwhere”. He is the audience's gateway into the mysterious realm of London Below. Richard is described as an ordinary man relocating from a small Scottish town to London. He appears like a polite, friendly, and helpful person, and he is by an elderly lady described as “a fresh-faced, boyish young man with dark slightly curly hair and large hazel eyes” (p. 95 l. 32-33). The lady firstly mistook him for a homeless person, because of his looks and appearance. “I have been homeless, so I know what it’s like” (p. 96 l. 10). Richard helps the elderly lady and gives her his umbrella. She is in the narrative between the lines presented as a wise sage, and she gives Richard the memorable advice to “Look out for doors”. (p. l.) At the beginning of the narrative, Richard’s life seems very predictable, he works with securities, he has a fiancée and a home, and it seems like his life is very structured and devoid of excitement. However, when he encounters the girl Door, and in an act of kindness helps her, it puts him on a chaotic path of unpredictability. Throughout the narrative, Richard undergoes significant character development, because the fantasy world is so far away from his regular life, and his familiar settings. He evolves from a passive observer with an ordinary life, to an active participant in the events unfolding around him.
