Denne opgave sammenligner to tekster, 'Fantasy IS escapism, but wait…' og 'The Numbing of America', med fokus på deres syn på fantasy og eskapisme. Den diskuterer, hvordan fantasy kan fungere som et sikkerhedsnet i det moderne samfund, og hvordan populærkultur ofte søger tilbage i tiden for komfort i usikre perioder. Compare the views of fantasy expressed in two of the texts below.

I have chosen to compare these to texts.

Text C: Fantasy IS escapism, but wait…”

Text D: The Numbing of America

Text C deals with the phenomena escapism, where you escape from the real world and your own problems into a ‘second life’ – the life of books, and the good things about fantasy.

Text D is about, Americans who are addicted to fantasy, because of the escapism and the fact that you will not have to deal with the daily life and the problems in your life, or the problems of the world.

Both texts deals with the phenomena escapism and the consequences from here. It is not negative to fantasy of leaving the real world, and diving into a fairy-tale world, where there are dragons, unicorns, witches, wizards etc. Text D shows that fantasy is the security net, in the modern society. Back in the 1960’s, where USA were in warfare with Vietnam, many Americans read fantasy too! J.R.R. Tolkien’s book called Lord of The Rings was popular back then and read by many! So was Narnia. Fantasy enlightens the life, in a whole other aspect. Or as G.K. Chesterton is quoted in text C,: ‘… Its purpose was to take the everyday, commonplace world and lift it up and turn it around and shot it to us from a different perspective, so that “once again” we see it again and realise how marvellous it is.”
