What is the definition of a patriot? Google says it is “A person who vigorously supports their

country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.”. This video “Why do Americans

love their flag” shows that there are many symbols of patriotism like singing the national anthem,

the flag and an eagle. The TED talk “A different understanding of American patriotism” shares a

different understanding to patriotism hence the name of the TED talk. It was published 2022 by

Deval Patrick. This analysis will focus on how Patrick engages the reader and how he uses appeal

forms to seem more convincing to the audience.

Patrick engages the audience through American ideals like the patriotism, liberty and justice. The

Declaration of Independence has a powerful effect on America because it appeals to Americans

values: “For some time now, in the words of one friend of mine, the self-evident truth that all people

deserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness seems a long way from settled in the American
