The short story ‘Bedtimes’, was written by Tim Parks in 2015. In the short story we explore a week in the life of a family. We follow the married couple Thomas and Mary, and their two children Mark and Sally throughout the story. Every day in the week, Thomas and Mary goes to bed at different times, to avoid each other. As an excuse to avoid each other in the daytime, Mary will go out with their dog Ricky and Thomas will find something else to do, like watching a movie with Mark or read emails. Their avoidance doesn’t seem to clear up nor find solutions to the problems they are going through. This will not only affect their relationship but will also leave their children stranded. One day the couple decides to go out, where they talk for quite a long time, but they don’t find solutions to the problems.

2. Essay – Bedtimes

Every family is loaded with pleasure and grief, and the purpose of this is to share it with the members of the family. If there’re problems, we should talk about it and work it out together, and not keep it to yourself and ignore it. Because that won’t get you anywhere and the rifts will only deepen. Families are different and there are various types of them, some are more advanced than others, and some on its last legs. In the short story ‘Bedtimes’, by Tim parks in 2015, we get to know a different type of family, where it is possible to get things solved but it isn’t as easy as it sounds.
