I chose the topic “people who changed the world” because I thought it sounded interesting.
When I had to pick a sub-topic, I wanted to focus on a woman, because we usually hear
about how men changed the world, and that made me curious. My teacher suggested Malala
Yousafzai, so I started researching her – and it actually turned out to be really inspiring.
Who is Malala Yousafzai?
Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, which is the biggest city in the Swat
Valley in Pakistan. She grew up in a family that really cared about education. Her dad,
Ziauddin, was a teacher and owned a school. He believed that both girls and boys should
have the right to go to school, and he taught Malala the same.
Even when she was really young, Malala loved learning. Her dad said she used to go into
classrooms before she could even talk and pretend to be the teacher.
But when she was about 10, everything changed. In 2007, the Taliban took control of the
Swat Valley. They made really strict rules and banned girls from going to school.
What impact did she have?
