On the Sidewalk bleeding is a story by Evan hunter. It’s about a 16-year-old boy who gets
stabbed. He is laying on the sidewalk bleeding and tries to call for help, but he has no voice.
Finally, a man sees Andy and walks towards him. However, the man is drunk and can’t see the
diCerence between blood and rain puddles, and he therefore assumes that Andy is drunk as
well. Then a couple comes into the alley and sees him. They were about to help him, but then
they noticed the words “The Royals” on Andys jacket. He is a gang member, and they were
afraid that “The Guardians”, which is another big gang group, would come after them if they
called the cops, so they left him there to die. He keeps waiting for someone to ?nd him, and
?nally his girlfriend Laura ?nds him, but it’s too late. he’s already dead.
Analysis
Andy is described with both inner and outer characterization. “He wore a bright purple silk
jacket. Across the back were the words, THE ROYALS.” (p.1). This tells us something about his
clothing, and it’s therefore an outer characterization. The inner characterization is when we
hear about what he thinks and feels. “Andy listened and thought: I love you, Laura. Laura, this
