The short story Ink, which is written by Olivia Douglass in 2022, touches upon the themes of identity crisis and complicated relations. Amy, who is the main character of the story, is married to her husband with whom she has a child. Despite that, their relationship is not exactly happy. One afternoon when Amy, who has just had a tattoo done, is on her way to collect her daughter, she suddenly bumps into a woman walking her Dachshund in the park, after which she quickly realizes that this woman is her former friend, Jade. The two old friends strike up a conversation and Amy reminisces about their shared past. As Amy’s daughter falls off her bike in the park, Jade offers them a lift, and the main character loses all sense of time and place as she and Jade share their memories together on their way home. At the dining table, after Amy and her daughter have been dropped off at their house, the atmosphere is tense, and the short story ends with an argument between Amy and her husband.
The plot revolves around a day in the life of the main character, who we follow closely when a number of things happen that in some way affect her existence. The main character, Amy Miller, can be characterized as a woman who appears to live a relatively ordinary family life with her 6-year-old child, who she gave birth to right after graduating from college, and a man whom she married after the birth of their child. The way in which she expresses herself, with the use of slang terms and various speech defects, as it appears in the quote, as well as her job which does not necessarily require any formal education, may indicate that she comes from a lower social class: “orite of course I remember you what you doing round here then.” (l. 39, p. 1).
