“Father and son” written by Bernard MacLaverty is a short story about a father and his son. The relationship between the father and son, changed because of the mother’s death.
On page 115 the author starts to use flashbacks to describe a time when the father and son were friends and spent time with each other doing things such as fishing. He uses a performance where we hear the voices of the father and the son, where we read the story from their different points of view. He emphasizes the fathers love and longing towards the son whom he isn’t able to speak with, he describes to us how the son wants to break free of his fathers motherly love wishing him to be more courageous, but most of all he draws our attention to their suffering because of the beloved mothers death.
On the first page, the father describes the way he feels about his son, and what he is going through because of his son neglects him. He also tells us that he loves him so much, and he feels sad because the son won’t talk to him anymore. He describes how his son let him down.
The son argues back by using sentences such as “Your hands shakes in the morning, because you’re a coward….He is scared of his own shadow” and “Every day you think I am dead. You live in fear. Of your own death, Mice have more courage”. The son expresses how he wishes that his father is braver and able to stand chest high chin up without being scared.
