Life can be tough sometimes. And our life is not being easier, if we also are psychologically affected. But the question is, can we live, while we know there is something wrong, even though we have the chance to tell the truth? Or will we wait until the truth comes out in some way, like Cal in this story?
The novel "CAL" by Bernard Mac Laverty takes place in Northern Ireland.
Cal is a young 19 years old Irish man, who lives alone with his father Shamie. His father works at the abattoir. Cal and his father are the only Catholic in a Protestant area.
When Cal was about 8 years old, his mother died. It has affected him a lot in his life.
We can see that he misses his mother. He dreams about her one night, how he is afraid and how she reassures him, and in that way, he gets more affected.
After his mother's death, he becomes good friends with Crilly and Skeffington, who he spends a lot of time with, and they are a part of the IRA like Cal himself. But Cal does not want to be a part of the IRA, but he will be labeled a traitor if he bows out of his role in the IRA, so he has no choice.
