The story ”A Good Hanging” is a short story from the collection about Ian Rankin’s fictive character, the Detective Inspector Rebus. All the short stories takes place in Edinburgh, and is about the solving of a criminal act. In our story, a murder has been committed, and we follow Detective Rebus and his assistant Inspector Holmes. The story is good to gain an insight into the environment of Edinburgh.

The negative associations with the Festival time, is brought up. As an tourist, it is a good thing to know, but furthermore the Festival visitors does not seem to give very much for protecting their property. It also tells that the city and the citizens habits change, when it becomes overpopulated. “finding their local pub taken over by Sassenachs” indicate that there is not much respect for the usual users of the pub.

The cast of the theatre are inspired by a newer entrance to the art of theatre, and is what people call ‘an alternative theatre’. There for many of the reviewers who are more conservative, have a negative aspect of the show, because they don’t follow the usual norms of a theatrical play. The criticism is far more negative and cynical, which also illustrate how some of the world-famous person are treated by the global and national newspapers. All of this is due to the mentality of the western civilization. The common gossip-reader find it more interesting if the celebrities are smeared and the text is controversial. The past two decades has been interesting with going beyond what is decent. But it is not the reviews that causes the murder.
