The short story, A Good Night’s Sleep, is about a man (George Lockhart) and a young homeless girl who tries to sleep at his doormat. The theme of this short story is homelessness. You could look at the theme in a bigger perspective, and then a theme could be; modern life in the city or problems of modern cities. The author, Brian McCabe, is well known for his riding about the modern society’s problems. And this story is clearly one of them, because homelessness is a bigger and bigger problem seen in the modern society. But if you look carefully, there are other small things that proves my saying such as; he is divorced, a growing problem in modern cities. He is also an insomniac, which means he finds it difficult to sleep. This is also a problem often seen in cities.
George Lockhart is a teacher of Communication and General Studies. He is recently divorced and he often thinks of his ex-wife Elaine. Whit Elaine he has a son called Ben witch stays whit him in the weekends. George is an insomniac. That means that he finds it difficult to fall asleep and he sleeps very light, so he easily wakes up by noises and stuff. I don’t think George is rich but either poor. I think that he is in “the middle class”. I believe that because he lives in the city over a late-night bar, not a place for an insomniac. The windows and doors are not especially isolated or soundproof. But still he has “one of those expensive beds, scientifically designed for the sleepless” has he describes it himself. And then he is a teacher, a popular middleclass job. I think that George Lockhart is a bit lonely. Out of the story you only hear about to persons that he knows. It is his ex-wife Elaine and his son Ben and none of them is there with him. He also says that he can’t start thinking about them, because then he can’t fall asleep. Maybe he regrets something? Maybe he wants to get back together whit Elaine? But honestly we don’t know it.
