Four hundred years ago, sailors who traveled between Europe and India usually stopped at Robben Island for a break away from the sea, there was plenty of food and nobody lived there. When the Dutch came to settle in South Africa, they dumped trash on Robben Island, and ill people and criminals too. The Criminals on the island had to build they’re own prison.
Most of the prisoners were put in single cells, but others were put into small rooms, and 70 people had to share with each other in the same room. They had to get up 5:30 and had Mealiepap as breakfast. The prisoners didn’t know much about the outside, because they weren’t allowed to listen to radio or read newspapers.
Children under 16 weren’t allowed to visit they’re fathers, and they wrote letters but they were often destroyed by the wardens. The last prisoner was released in 1991 and the prison was closed in 1996. Robben Island became a museum and more than 300,000 people visit there every year.
During the apartheid the country was divided into two, a poor black part and a white rich part, only the white could vote. In 1991 the apartheid ended and the long battle between the blacks and whites also came to an end, as the white and black leaders began to work together in peace. In 1994 an election was held to vote for a government, and this was the first time the blacks could vote, and it was a day of celebration.
