A mother would do anything for her child and why should she not? This is a scary world with a crime rate higher than ever and wars going on at this very second. But is that an excuse to isolate your child from the world, an excuse to put your child in a little box so that no one can reach him? The band Pink Floyd has written a song about a mother who is a little too protective of her child.

The song begins with a lot of questions referring to the mother about the child’s security. The questions being asked are responded by the mother with a sense of “Do not worry because I will never let anything happen to you”. But you do not notice anything wrong about this do you? Neither did I the first time I read the lyrics but a closer look reveals a lot of knowledge. In some particular places we see the mother’s liability to overprotect her child; “Of course Mama’s gonna help build the wall” and the wall which is mentioned here is protecting the child from the outside but traps it inside. Also “Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you” gives us the impression of overprotection. But in my opinion the most important and decisive line is the very last one;“Mother did it need to be so high” and it is referring to the wall that she helped him build, but being the way she is, she built the thing too high, and the child has no way out now.
