The story of Sadie and Kevin takes place in Belfast in Northern Ireland. Belfast was at that time separated in two parts, the catholic area, and the protestant area. In many years there has been a conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants. It was so bad, that the Catholics didn’t dare to go to the protestant area, and the Protestants didn’t dare to go to the Catholic area. Belfast saw the worst of the conflict in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s. At that time the conflict included bombing, assassination and street violence.
Sadie is a member of the Jackson family, and it is a Protestant family. She lives with her mother, Mrs. Jackson, her father Mr. Jackson and her brother Tommy.
Kevin is a member of the McCoy family, and it is a Catholic family. He lives with his sister Brede, six other siblings, his pregnant mother, Mrs McCoy and his father, Mr. McCoy.
Kevin meets Sadie on the street. They used to go in the same school but that was long time ago, and they didn’t keep contact. They decided to go to a cafe and talk. After that they went up to Cave Hill. Outside the cafe they met Linda. She was an old friend of Sadie. She was not happy to see Kevin, so she left right away. Linda told Sadie’s family about Sadie’s meeting with Kevin. Linda loves gossip, just like her mother. She doesn’t like Kevin, and that was probably the reason why she told Sadie’s family about their meeting.
