I believe, there is one theme in the book, which appears again and again. It’s a very important theme, and a theme in many books. The theme is love.
You can’t control love and who you fall in love with. It can’t be true, that you´re not allowed to fall in love with a person because of religion. There are limits for love for example the age. You can’t be 30 and be with a person who is 10, but religion shouldn’t be one of the limits.
In addition, there are many messages in the book. The writer, Joan Lingaard, has thought about violence. Violence doesn’t solve problems. It creates problems, and leads to more violence. I have always been told, “Violence is just like fire in dry grass. It spreads very fast and when it first begins, it’s hard to stop”.
I also think, Joan Lingaard has thought about, that we can’t let other people control our lives. We should do, what we want. Not what everybody else want us to do. Therefore, she has chosen to write a book about love, forbidden love.
Kevin McCoy is a Catholic. He is about eighteen years old. He lives in Belfast with his mother, father and his eight sisters and brothers. They live in a poorer area. When Kevin finished school, he began working for Mr. Kelly in his scrapyard. His girlfriend is Sadie, a Protestant, and Kevin’s parents aren’t very pleased by that. He is a dreamer, who wishes peace in Northern Ireland. Kevin goes to church with his family regularly.
