The chimera began with the inventive German botanist Hans Winkler which created a plant that was part black nightshade and part tomato. It was one hundred years ago. From there the scientists started to create the chimera. The name chimera came from the Greek mythology which was part lion, part goat and part snake.

You can make a chimera with a mix of for example two different kinds of animal cells. There are two ways to create a chimera. The first one is the postal which they inject the animal after the birth. The other one is the prenatal way when you inject the animal embryo. The postal way is much safer in theory than prenatal because you are sure what will happen. In 1988 Irving Weissmann professor of pathology and developmental biology at Stanford University in California, created a mouse-human chimera by injecting the mouse with human stem cells. So the mouse had the same immune system as humans. Since then Weismann thought that it might be possible to fashion a mouse with a brain comprised of human cells.

On the other hand there was also the talk of taking advantage of the chimera to human transplantation and it was with the prenatal way they could do that. A the university of Nevada they created a flock of chimeras that were 87 percent sheep and 15 percent human and they had the humanized organs. It could be used as organ transplants.
