High school shootings take place everywhere in the world – it is not necessarily related to a specific country or town only, but of course the USA and Canada represent most shootings. This is of course due to their weapons law. It is not illegal to have weapons as it is in other countries. For example we learned that people in the States were given guns if they opened an account in a bank. That is of course much too dangerous. In Denmark gun holders need strict certificates. However, the reason for becoming a shooter is not country related. Why do young people end up in this situation?

Virtually all the perpetrators are boys, and could not be involved in social matters, for example the football team because the people who mobbed them at school also went on the team. Since their teachers have not seen the bullying or not responded to it, the perpetrators turned themselves against the school and consider it with suspicion and hatred.

The pupils who are doing the shootings are mostly getting mobbed in school, feel differently or having problems at home. The typical school shooter is a white boy between 13-18 years, but sometimes children down to 6 years. The act happens oft because the boys are kindled of an enormous hatred against their school, the society and sometimes their families too. Hatred of the family is often mixed with guilt and shame about the lack of performance in school. With the smaller children it is usually different; one can discuss whether they themselves have always been aware of what they did. Mostly the shooting is done at the beginning or middle of their teenage years, although some also choose to carry out the attack a few days before their High School Graduation. These young people have often felt left out for several years, which may seem strange to their surroundings as they often have a larger circle of friends.
