We have chosen Gandhi because he did a lot to help people who were exposed to prejudice, and people that didn’t have rights.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - He is also popularly known as "Mahatma" Gandhi. "Mahatma" means "great soul" in the Indian language Sanskrit - was born in the town of Porbander (now Gujarat) the 2nd of October 1869 – the 30th of January 1948. His father was Karamchand Gandhi and his mother was Putlibai Gandhi.
Gandhi was a peace fighter; he fought for better conditions for the Indian people, from 1893 to 1914 in South Africa. He was also an Indian politician and led the Indian people to independence and freedom; he inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom all over the world, across of continents.
Gandhi became famous by fighting for the civil rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa, using the new techniques of non-violent civil disobedience that he developed. He was a lifelong opponent of communalism.
Gandhi did a lot. He led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, and he fought for the independence of India from British domination.
CHILDHOOD
Look, this is very interesting. Gandhi’s earliest childhood was like everybody else in India, but he really liked the Indian Classics, especially the stories about Shravana and King Harishchandra. The stories had a great impact on Gandhi in his childhood. In his autobiography, he admits that they left an indelible impression on his mind. He writes: "It haunted me and I must have acted Harishchandra to myself times without number.” It means that Gandhi compared Harishchandra to himself.
