Referees in soccer: challenges and fan behavior

In this assignment I will tell you about my opinion of the referee’s work on the field, what their decisions can have for a match, and if they use their power to referee something completely different than what is meant to be the right, because he takes side with the other team. I have even tried to be in a situation where I was a referee and where some of the parents were not happy with my decision.

Is good sportsmanship dead – or doesn’t it apply to fans?

In a soccer game, there must be some sort of unrest on the field. Not much, just a little, because otherwise the match will be too boring to watch for the fans. If the players do not have some temper the match may become boring to watch, and the players will not cheer each other up, and eventually the match will die out. And I do not think the players will like the game if none of them are eager for victory.

Is it always easy to respect the referee’s decision?

No, it is not always easy to agree with the referee’s decision. In soccer you often see a lot of the players complaining about the referee. Some of the things that leave spectators, coaches or players complaining and angry with the referee is if a free kick is awarded, the ball being judged out, if there is offside or if the referee just make a wrong judgement to the other team in a throw in. I have experience with it myself when I play football. I even referee some matches myself, though it is only kids in the age 7-10 years and with only 5 players on the field, yet there is still someone complaining. I do not think it is smart that the parents complain that much in front of their children. They kind of teach their children how to tell the referee whether his decision is right or wrong and that nothing really happens when you complain. I even think it is tiresome when parents on the touchline complain, but it must be difficult for referees who are refereeing matches with adolescents from 12-13 years and up to old-boys. There is a lot more grumbling and a tougher language that may hurt the referee a bit.
