The story takes place in Barrytown, Ireland. The family consists of eight members. There’s the father named Dessie, there’s the mother named Kay, there’s the oldest daughter named Sharon, and then there is a five other children.
The first scene Sharon tells her parents that she is pregnant. The parents are reacting pretty calm, even though they have received some rather shocking news. They ask Sharon a lot of questions, and she answers all of them except one. “Who is the father” Dessie asks her. But Sharon will not give her parents an answer. During the conversation, the children upstairs are fighting. The father goes upstairs and gives the children a good ol’ spankin’. When the father gets downstairs again, he asks Sharon if she wants to go to the pub, and have a pint. At first Sharon does not want to go, but finally she agrees to come along.
A couple of days after Sharon visits George Burgess, their neighbor. He’s an old grumpy man, but he is also the father to Sharon’s child. He was very angry at Sharon for showing up at his house. But then he kinda feels sorry for her. He wants to give Sharon some money, but she does not take them.
