The movie is set in Ireland, in a small town, where a 20 year old girl, called Sharon Curley, announces she is pregnant. Her parents are stunned, but after a bit of gawping, they are surprisingly supportive. Her father suggests in a hushed voice that she should have an abortion, but she refuses, saying abortion is murder.
At first she won’t tell who the father is, but later, as THE? word get out and the village believes George Burgess knocked her up, she claims that he’s a Spanish sailor. When George Burgess starts bragging to his friends about what a “great little ride” she was, it is revealed that he’s the father. She pays him a visit, telling him to shut his gob, or she’ll tell his wife. He tries to buy her off, and she refuses the money, until he gives her her knickers, wich he was going to show to “the lads”, then she takes the money and leaves. Later when Mr. Burgess leaves his wife, and Mrs. Burgess confronts Mrs. Curley with her knowledge, Sharon has a flashback to the night it all happened. she was drunk, and walked to the club’s parking lot, where Mr. Burgess was just getting out of his car. He took advantage of her stupor, had sex with her, and took her knickers. Afterwards she didn’t even know who he was. After that, the whole town is talking about nothing else, and everybody’s pointing fingers at her, and whispering in the corners. Some even mock her, and her friend Yvonne, who’s the daughter of Mr. Burgess, can’t stand the sight of her.
