The short story is about a middle aged man named Fintan. The years have past him in the same unconventional routines as an artist with various partners. One day Fintan’s present girlfriend tricks him to clean out his mother’s attic. In the attic he finds a red truck which sends him back to his sixth birthday.

At the time he was overpower by his brothers who bullied and beat him. The truck became after his birthday the thing that gave him an escape from them. Then one day when he awoke the truck was gone and he went to the kitchen to burst out in rage and accuse the brothers of stealing it. Then about a month later he finds the truck where he must have dropped it, and hide it in his closet.

When Fintan leaves the attic now, he goes to his mother with the truck to show her what he found in his brother’s box.

Characterisation of Fintan (426 words)

You have to divide Fintan’s character into two, because there is a difference between his pattern as a child and as a grown up. I will begin with Fintan as a Child.

Fintan is a submissive child. He is afraid and lonesome and has a very distant relationship to his family. He is daily bullied by his brothers and the father is described as the house’s leader who by his size dominates everyone in the family. Fintan wants to be approved of by his father and respects him, though the father does not even attend his birthday.
