In this movie analysis I will discuss the subjects goals and drugs. It seems like Mark Renton and his friends don’t have any goals and are not getting any further with their lives. The main subject in Trainspotting is of course drugs and drug abusing. In the end I will weave these two subjects together and my personal opinion.
In the beginning Renton describes a form of life, which most is living, but not him. He is describing the typical life with contempt; a man and a wife, who has a couple of children. They have jobs and live very nice with a big TV. He is just opposite. When he is talking about to choose life, a family and a big TV, he is on the run. And when he says: “Choose a good health” he is smoking a cigarette. It is very ironic. Another example to this is, when he says: “Choose an owner-occupied flat” he is standing in an apartment with a big hole in the wall and only a couple of chairs in it. In this monolog Renton is telling us, that they are not like most of the people, they have chosen something else.
Even though Renton described the “normal” life with contempt, Renton wants it! Several times he tries to stay clean, and he doesn’t want to have anything to do with drugs again, but he hasn’t the strength to it. He doesn’t have any form of goals in his life, and thereby it is hard to stay clean. All he actually has is drugs, and if he is taking that out of his life, he has nothing, because he only has his friends because of the drugs.
