Gandhi Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) - also called “Mahatma”, “great soul”, Gandhi – is perhaps the most important man in recent Indian history. To many, he is a symbol of important Indian values, but he is also an unusual kind of hero and a freedom fighter. When Gandhi was a young man, India was still a British colony. This meant that, India, although many thousands of miles away from Great Britain, was ruled from there; that it was the Parliament in London that decided the laws that ruled India, and that the English King was the official head of state
