In the short story:”A Simple Exchange of Niceties” we are introduced to the narrator by herself; a young girl who is pregnant. She is thinking about a bench in the park which is the one place she feels accepted. It is here she reflects on hers and the people around hers situations. The story is situated at the bench where she revolves on the reality of her being pregnant and what this means / not means to her.
She became pregnant by accident. It was not supposed to happen. That is the exact same way she feels about herself; that she was not supposed to happen. She is very degrading on herself. She does not believe she will ever amount anything and neather does she believe she is meant to be a mother. It sort of just happened. The father to the unborn child is a young man as well. He is not a father figure and he is not even close to the point in life where you decide to have children. She think she is in love with him, but I would say that she is just confused about her situation and believes that it would be a lot easier if she had someone by her side.
