In the short story ”A Simple Exchange of Niceties” by Joanne Fedler we are introduced into the narrator by herself. The narrator is a young girl who is pregnant. She loves a bench in the park which is the one place she feels accepted. The bench is the place where she reflects on hers situation and the people around her. The story takes place at the bench where the narrator revolves on the reality of her being pregnant and what this means and not means to her.
The narrator sees herself as an insecure person, because in her life she has not achieved something. She has not a good job and she has neither archived her teenage dreams about art school in Paris. Another reason why she is insecure is that she one day met a guy called Damien, while she was playing pool. The narrator ended up having sex with Damien and she became pregnant with him. Damien doesn’t want to have kids or anything to do with the child that the narrator is waiting. Damien also calls her a lot of bad things like trashy whore. The things Damien calls her has had a bad influence on her confidence. Her insecurity is also caused by that the narrator thinks that her mother hates her.
