”Go ask Alice” is a book based on a diary of an anonymous teenage girl named Alice. She is the daughter of a university professor. An ordinary middle-class teenager who is preoccupied with boys, diets and other things associated with teenagers. Her life takes a sharp turn for the worse when her family moves to a new town. She feels isolated. She returns to the old town and spends the summer with her grandparents. During her stay, she is invited to a party by a girl named Jill Peters. Unaware Alice drinks coca-cola that has been mixed with LSD, a game they play named “Bottom Bottom”. The other guests “mistakenly” assume she is aware of the "game". After this incredible experience of taking drugs, she becomes a drug addict. When she returns to her new town, she wants to turn away from drugs, but unfortunately she gets new friends who are also drug addicts. She starts dating a drug dealer (Richie) and sells drugs for him. After realizing he is using her, she turns him in to the police and runs away from home with her new friend Chris. They move to San Francisco, where they find jobs and in a little boutique. Chris’ boss (Shelia) gives them heroin, and raped them with her boyfriend. After this Chris and Alice run away to another part of San Francisco, where they open a boutique, but they became home-sick and decide to go home.Alice is welcomed back warmly by her family, but she realises that she can’t do without taking drugs, and runs away again. She spends time living in the streets, a period which her diary is not dated. She finds herself having sexual relations with strangers. But she gets enough courage to ask a priest for help to be able to return home. When she returns home she wants to stay drug-free. She succeeds. However, she is nagged by her former friends and ignored by the "square" kids. She starts a new relationship with a student, Joel, who she met at her father's university. While babysitting, she is drugged without her knowledge. She has a bad trip, and a neighbour locks her in a closet when she becomes violent. She is sent to psychiatric hospital. After being released, she returns home, and finally happy. She lives a new life, and decides not to keep a diary.
