After the American Civil War, in 1865, some white people in the southern states started the Ku Klux Klan. The members of Ku Klux Klan believe very much that white people are better than all the other races, and they believe that the other races are not good enough to live among the white people. They believe that the black people are the lowest of all races. Their goal is to get total segregation of the races.

The very first clan of this kind was started the 24th of December in 1865, by 6 men from Tennessee. These 6 men were dissatisfied with the outcome of the Civil War between the southern and northern states. The Civil War had just ended 8 months and 4 days before the clan was founded. Brian A. Scates was elected to be the leader of this organization. This new clan used violence, but Ku Klux Klan was not, at that time, the only organization that used violence. The hatred to the black people grew bigger and bigger, and in 1868 the number of members had grown very big, actually 500.000 members. The clan also became interested in politics, and they scared the black people away from the election places. They would also kill politicians who didn’t share their point of view.
