There was complete silence in the church, when the pastor came up on the church pulpit. He spread his arms out like a circus director and began his speech about the deceased, he was about to present to the rest. He knew well enough not who the man was, but he may have been held, because the church was almost completely full of grieving people in black clothes. And it was even a large church. On the front row – in a small dark blue dress, because you could not buy as little black dresses – sat a sad little girl with her face buried in her hands. The pastor could hardly imagine that it might be the deceased’s daughter. She sat all alone and seemed too young to have to suffer such a huge loss so early in life. The girl escaped to look at the white wooden coffin, which contained her father. She could not quit understand, that her father was dead down there. He was sudden death – a heart attack, doctor’s had said, although she did not believe it. He has always been quite healthy until the night before his dead. He had seemed terribly sick and the next morning he was just dead. She expected all the time to see him crawl out of the coffin and take her in his arms to comfort her. He would say that everything would sort itself. She glanced surreptitiously toward the coffin. The pastor stopped his speech and asked people to stand up to pray. The little girl was sitting, but clasped her hands and sent her father a few thoughts. Shortly after, it was over. A number of men, when the girl didn’t knew, rose from their seats and brought the coffin out of the church. The little girl followed it with her aunt in her hand. Her aunt looked sadly after the coffin, while she tried to suppress her tears. At that moment, that girl crossed the back row where there was a single man. She had not noticed him before. He was wearing a thick overcoat and a hat from which dark hair was sticking out. He had amber eyes that caught the little girl’s attention in a few seconds. Then they walked away and the man disappeared from her vision. The men stuffed the coffin into a black car, which with screeching tires drove away from the church. Only when the car was out of her visual field, could the little girl cry for real
