Analyse af 'After Caravaggio’s Sacrifice of Isaac'

This story, is about deciding whether the bond between a father and his son is more important than the passionate love between man and women.

The story is told from a first person point of view. The narrator of the story, Alan, is the central character. This point of view makes the reader more intimate with the narrator, and the story would be completely different if it was told from another point of view, or from another person’s point of view. The main theme in this short story is love, not love between lovers but more love between a father and his son.

During the birth of the Narrator, Alan’s son his wife suffers from a postnatal depression which means she cannot get attached to their son. As a result Alan is forced to take unpaid time of work to take care of their child. Because of his wife’s depression she cannot stand being around Ian, so Alan walks around London with his child. Here he comes to fall in love with art, which fascinates and colours his world. During his time indulging with art he meets a German woman called Grete, a woman whom was everything his wife wasn’t, strong, beautiful and delicate. She gives him the same feelings art gives him. Alan gets drawn to this woman and gains confidence in himself because of her. But when Grete is forced to go back home, she gives him an ultimatum between her and his son. In the end Grete left Alan at the airport even though he chose to sacrifice his relationship with his child. That day Alan went back to his family and old habits hoping that his son never would find out what terrible things his father had done.
