The Sandwich Factory: Jason Kennedy 2007In the short story “The Sandwich Factory “ we are following the 1st person narrative he is working at a low-paid sandwich factory in the bowling alley. When he is at work he had to wear a paper suit and a blue hairnet. It is not the right look to meet a girl, he thinks. But there is only one woman at the factory her name is Dot. “dot was a female lech, who had presumably had one of the top teeth at the side removed, sp that when she laughed at something about sex, you would see an awful black space where a tooth should be. It was a terrible shame that it was in 1994 and Dot lived in the Midlands, as she would’ve been an excellent pirate, giving blowjobs on the high seas, and making all the pirates sandwiches” (page 1, line 33 – p.2, line 37) as the following quotation shows is that the way Jason Kennedy is describes all the persons we meet in the text. They way he describes the persons, makes the reader feel like they know them, and have an idea of how the look. He has worked at the factory in a few days before his tomato dream began. He describes in details how the tomatoes were sliced, chilled and were they come from. Because of it is writing in 1st person narrative, are we following the main characters thoughts and feeling. It is clear that the tomatoes have a big role in the text, the dream he is dreaming about is only about the tomatoes and what terrible things he imaged could happen. “The acid in the tomatoes would bite into the fingers after a while, making them sting, stinging the soul. All kinds of bitter thoughts filled me in” (p.2, 53 – 55) the tomatoes is a symbol of his thoughts and feelings! In this dream he think about sitting a director’s chair and watching all the hard working people at the factory, and yell in a megaphone “Boulders down! I want sixty thousand egg salad and I want them know! So move it”, in this dream he want everything to go fast no one may be behind the schedule, the high tempo he wants in this dream is also to find in the way the text is written, the structure in the text is fast, in the beginning we hear quickly about where he works, and why. And after that we are been telling his dream, and how his thoughts is. We are also giving a description of some of the workers. The way everything in the text is written gives the feeling of the fast tempo there is on a factory. The is thinking of how it would be if you locked the door so everyone is lock in the factory if anyone was behind the schedule or there were a larger order than usual. He thinks it would be interesting to see how people would react. “There ways to respond to being locked in. firstly, no response, keep working same rate. Or start working faster, so the work would be finish sooner and the doors would reopen. Or finally, accept that you were here till the end and slow down, collecting more pay” – money is also a thing that plays a big role in the text, our main character wants to be director, and he would choose to be locked in a room work slow, so he could own more money. “ I entertained a vision of one day being rich and hiring a bunch of faded paunchy managers to recreate the myth of Sisyphus in my back garden, as I sat in the director’s chair” (p.2 59 – 61). The author Jason Kennedy is making a lot of descriptions, he wants he reader to know exactly who the main character is, there is a lot of indirect descriptions of the 1st person narrator,
