I have chosen to write about the Amish and their rights to be different. The reason that I have chosen to write about that is because, I think it is important to be different. And if we all looked the same and practiced the same religions it would be very boring to live on earth.
The Amish people originally came from Switzerland and where known as the Mennonites, named after their leader Menno Simons who was a catholic priest from Holland. The leader of the people who wanted the church to be stricter was Jacob Amman. He has also given name to the Amish. One of the things that he decided was that you should stay away from people who had been expelled from the church. This is called shunning and is still used today in the Amish communities.
The Amish people moved to USA because they had heard about religious tolerance and rich farmland in the new world. As a matter of fact they were invited by William Penn who was the founder of the North American state Pennsylvania. So the Amish people moved there and settled in a county called Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. But today the Amish people have spread to 24 states; some of those states are Ohio, Indiana and Iowa.
