“Toby Heckler placed the slip of yellow paper under his windshield wiper of the black Oldsmobile that straddled two parking spaces. On the yellow paper Toby had printed in red ink ‘PRAKING MISTEAK’ and signed his name ‘TOBY’ in a childish-looking-hand.” This quote is a very central symbol of the theme, because through this whole story we follow the boy named Toby during his walk around in the city. Toby is wearing a pad of papers, on which he notes down peoples crimes and hands out the slips for the culprits.
When you read this text you really get confused by Toby’s miss-spelling. In the first line of the quote above, you just think he is an ordinary carpark attendant, but when you see how he spells you get in doubt. And the text doesn’t tell us that he writes down anything else but the illegalness and his name. That is also pretty strange if this was a real carpark attendant.
I think his miss-spelling is due to his mentally condition. I think he is mentally handicapped.
And due to lack of care from home, he walks around in the city and get out his frustrations by playing police-officer around in the city.
