Charles Babbit, known as ”Charlie” is a very self-centred man, but he is also a very charming man who knows how he talks to people and cheat them. All in his life has turned out wrong. He lives in Los Angeles and he got his own automobile seller/dealer/hustler/cheater/gambler firm, and it’s going straight-line down! He can’t pay his bills, always pushes the bills. A few days more, and he cannot even deliver his own sold cars! The customers are furious and want their money back. Charlie is desperate and he really needs money!
On Charlie and his girlfriend Susanna’s weekend trip to a hotel, he gets a call from his father’s lawyer. His father is dead, he tells him. ”Okay, that’s all?” Charlie asks. Susanna does not understand his calm approach to the shocking news. He tells her that his mother died when he was two years old. After that his father did not - ever - show any kind of love or praise. He didn’t feel that he appreciated him. One day when Charlie was 16 years old he used his dad’s 1948 Buick car without permission which resulted in ending up in jail for two days because his dad reported it stolen, even though he knew that it was Charlie who just drove in his own fathers car. They never saw each other since that day.
