The short story by Ray Bradbury is written in a third-person limited point of view, because the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of Mr. Howard. The story is about an old teacher who hates children so awfully much, that it ends up killing him.
The relationship between Mr. Howard and the children is not good. Mr. Howard is traumatized by the terrible incident that happened in his old class when he was a teacher. The other children in the class pushed one of his students out the window, and now he sees every kid as a little monster and not as a human. He simply despises them. Ex p. 57 line 17 – 19: (Mr. Howard speaking) “sometimes I believe children are little monsters thrust out of hell, because the devil could no longer cope with them.” He despises children so much that he has split up with his former girlfriends because of them. Ex p. 57 line 3: He never married. The few women he approached always desired – children.
Mr. Howard speaks very sophisticated and advanced to the kids like if he is showing them that he is much more wise and clever than they are. Ex p. 57 – 58 line 38 – 2: (Mr. Howard speaking) “What’re you whispering about, back there? Some necromancy or other?” A little girl raised her hand. “What’s necromancy?” Ex p. 59 line 6 – 7: “Deliberate lies,” Mr. Howard tapped his cane in an impatient code. “Falsification of the highest calibre…” By doing that, he contemns the children and distances himself from them.
