All fathers have a relationship with their daughters, and they are very protective of them. Maybe that is why they get so hurt, when their little girls grow up and disappoint them. The short story A Trip to Grand Rapids written by Garrison Keillor in 1987, is about a such an incident.
This short story is about an American family, who lives in a farm with their dog and cat. The short story has a 3rd person narrator who is omniscient. The overall setting is in America, and the particular setting is at their farm by Lake Wobegon.
Roger Hedlund lives in a farm with his wife Cindy, and his two teenage daughters Cathy and Martha, who he loves a lot. He trusts them a lot, and that is why he is very stunned when he finds out that they are throwing a party and he sees one of his daughters smoking: “No! No! He thought. Don’t. She put it in her mouth, his sweet little daughter. Oh darling child, don’t. A boy lit it and out of her sweet lips came smoke. Roger had taken two steps out from behind the coop. He wanted to run to her and yet he didn’t” (page 3 line 80). This indicates how devastated he gets when he sees this. He feels so hopeless and disappointed. He wanted to stop the party, but he did not, because he was tired of being a dad. “You know something.” he said. “I’m getting tired of being a dad.” He didn’t want to march in and be the cop, have everybody get quiet and him make a speech while sullen kids slink away cursing him under their breath”, (page 3 line 91).
