The short story A Trip to Grand Rapids, written by Garison Keillor, from the collection of short stories Leaving Home published by Viking Penguin in 1987, describes a man called Roger Hedlund’s experience of a party thrown by his teenage daughters.
Roger and his wife Cindy is on their way to visit Cindy’s sister, when Roger decides to turns the car around and go back to their house, where their daughters Cathy and Martha are alone. When Roger and Cindy are a half-mile from their home they see light and here loud music. They park and decide to go up to the house where they discover that the daughters are having a party, which they have not mentioned to their parents. Roger and Cindy discuss whether or not they should forbid the party, but Roger decides that he doesn’t want to be a ‘cop’, and they head back to their car. The car is however stuck in mud, and they make their way back to the party to have some teenagers help them with getting it free. They get the car free and when they discover that they have lost their money, Martha collects some from the party attendants, and Roger and Cindy heads to Cindy’s sister again, discussing their own party memories.
