Jane Jones was a doctor from New York. Her parent’s was poor. They had a hard life, but Jane was very clever. She had a photographic memory. Other kids called her a ‘freak’. In Jane’s school all kids were poor. Nobody had ever gone to the university. It was very expensive. But Jane got money from the government, because she was super clever. She won the Lincoln prize. She decided to study medicine, to help people.
But Jane did not like being a doctor in New York. She wanted to help people, and that was hard, when there were so many doctors in New York.
Jane decided to move. She moved to Hicksville. Hicksville is a little city in Alabama. Here Jane was needed. There were so many poor people to help, in Hicksville, both blacks and whites.
Jane helped many people in Hicksville, but only the poor ones. Because the rich people got a doctor they trusted, a doctor who had lived in Hicksville all his life. Therefor did Jane not get a lot of money. But she didn’t want to become rich anyway.
One time a young girl came into Jane’s office. She was pregnant. But she didn’t know anything about babies. Sammy Jo was her name. She was very young and pretty. But she couldn’t have a baby. Her father would get very angry. ‘’ I would rather die!’’ Sammy Jo said. ‘’ My father will kill me if he found out that I’m pregnant, he’s the sheriff of the town. He’s name is Al Connors, but all call’s him big Al. ’’. Then Jane wrote the address on an abortion clinic, in a big town called Fairview.
