Other kids called her a `freak'. In Jane's school all kids were poor. Nobody had ever gone to the university. It was very expensive. But Jane got money from the government, because she was super clever. She won the Lincoln prize. She decided to study medicine, to help people. But Jane did not like being a doctor in New York. She wanted to help people, and that was hard, when there were so many doctors in New York. Jane decided to move. She moved to Hicksville. Hicksville is a little city in Alabama. Here Jane was needed. There were so many poor people to help, in Hicksville, both blacks and whites. |
