Once were warriors. The story takes place in New Zealand, Auckland. It about a maori family. The father, Jake, beats his wife, he drinks a lot and throw parties all the time, but he loves his family anyways. He has a big problem with his temper. His family is fed up with all these alcohol and violence problems.

The family has 5 children. The oldest, Grace, keeps a journal about her life, and likes to write, and tell stories for her siblings.

The film begins with Jake, getting fired from his job. At day, he drinks at a pub with his friends. At night, he throw parties at home. He often beats his wife, Beth. Nig, their oldest son, moves out on the streets, and join a gang, that requires facial tattoos. He gets beat up, as a welcoming from the gang. Boogie is the next oldest son. He is involved with some criminality, and since he’s a minor, he get taken away from the family, and placed at place for young criminals. He learns to fight, and Maori cultures.

Grace, the daughter, loves to write. She writes down everything that going on around her, and tells stories to her younger siblings. She wants to visit Booger. After a long fight, Jake finally agrees. He rents a car, but instead of visiting Booger, Jake ends up with his friends at the bar, with the rest of the family, waiting in the car. Grace gets fed up. Beth lies to Booger. She said that there was an accident. Grace hears it, and calls her a liar. She gets out of the house, to visit her friend Toot, who lives in a car wreck.
