"Once were warriors" is a film about the Maoris life. And about a drinking violent father, destroying a Maori
Family. The parents Jake and Beth and their four kids are living in the ghetto of New Zealand. Father Jake drinks a lot, and he is also a very violent guy. His wife Beth can't keep her mouth shut, she drinks too, but not as much. Jake is a huge, strong and very good fighter. The movie shows some very scary scenes, where Jake fights other men at the pub, and they don't have a chance. But Jake is not only violent to other men at the pub, he also attacks Beth at home, when she can't keep her mouth shut, and answers him back. The oldest son gets into a Maori gang, not a criminal one, but one who keeps the Maori traditions. Their characteristic is a special face tattoo, and off cause the son gets one off those. The younger son gets to a special Maori dancing school, because of a crime he made. Then there are two little sisters, a 13 years old one, and a little baby. At a party the father gets violent to Beth and beats her. The house is totally messed up. Beth is angry, but it doesn't last long before she forgives Jake. At another party the uncle rapes the 13 years old girl, she runs away to her best friend, who lives in a car. They sit and talk, and suddenly he kisses her. She run away from him, with the words "you are just like the other!" She runs back to her father with her dairy. He is angry and breaks it. Some hours later they find her committed suicide. The whole family is down, but they make I huge funeral. But Beth doesn't stop fighting, she walks into the pub and shows Jake the broken letter, where the 13 years old girl, wrote the story about the uncle raping her. Of course Jake almost kills him. In the ending of the film, we see Beth, the children and the friend of the 13 years old dead sister, in a scene leaving Jake alone, looking for a new life.
