The story takes place in New Zealand, Auckland. It’s about a Maori family, that lives in a hard and though environment. The family: Jake (The Muss) dad, Beth mom, Nig the oldest boy, distances himself from his father’s violent behavior, and has therefore decided to leave the home and join a gang on the street. The other boy in the family is Mark/Boog are criminal so therefore he was sent to a foster home so he could learn how to behave properly. Then we have Grace the oldest daughter on 13 who loves to write in her diary and loves to write and read stories to her younger siblings. At last we have the 2 small kids who love to listen to grace stories.

The film starts with Jake are getting fired from his job and instead of seeking a new job he stayed unemployed so he can spend the most of his time drinking at the local pub with his mates Jake also loved to throw off a party at his home and when hold those parties the kids was just sent to bed and Beth to the kitchen so she could cook for them and sometimes Beth don’t want to cook or clean or something then jake just beat her up and that happened one day before Mark was sent to court so the next day Beth face was completely ruined so she couldn’t meet mark at the court and that’s why Mark needed to live in a foster home just because his father couldn’t behave him. One day Jake was holding a party “Uncle Billy” decide to go upstairs and into Graces room. He lies down next to Grace, and he rapes her. Grace doesn't know how to tackle it, so she doesn't tell anybody. Grace couldn't handle it, so one night she makes a end of here suffering, and decides to hang herself in a three in the backyard. Beth want to make the funeral to a real Maori funeral so she decide to bring her back to Beth’s home city but Jake don’t want to be a part of that so he is just drinking at a pub as usual. After the funeral Beth finds Grace diary, where she wrote the story about the rape. Nig and Beth confront Jake with the story, which result in Jake kills “Uncle Billy” at the pub. Then Beth decides to leave with the Kids and live a normal live without any drinking and violence.
