This movie tells the story of the Heke family, Jake is the father, Beth is the mother, Grace is the daughter, Boogie is the son and the same is Nig. Jake Heke is a violent man who beats his wife frequently when drunk, and yet obviously loves both her and his family. The movie follows a period of several weeks in the family's life showing Jake's frequent outburst of violence and the effect that this has on his family. The youngest son is in trouble with the police and may be put into a foster home while the elder son is about to join a street gang. Jake's daughter has her own serious problems, which are a key element in the plot.
Describe the life of one from the Heke family:
I have chosen to describe Beth. She is a strong, confident character and the opening sequence of the film supports this impression. However, she is not strong enough to defend herself against Jakes attacks. After Jake has beaten Beth up, she tells Mavis that it is the same old story making it clear that this has happened before. Revealing clearly that in a society this is nothing out of the unexpected and is even quite funny to her, the advice she gives was you know the rules, keep your mouth shut and your legs open. However, she does advise Beth to make Jake wake his ideas up, but does not suggest that she should leave Jake.
